Opinion Piece
The war in Mexico ultimately started because of drugs. Mexico, along with every other country in the world has had its problems with drug use and trade. The whole drug operation will never cease to exist, but I believe certain changes throughout the operation are permissible. For the sake of a better world, these changes should be applied and enforced.
Childhood is especially crucial in a person’s life and essentially creates the personality structure of an individual. The Mexican drug war has taken a toll on the children not only physically, but mentally as well. The fact that children have seen slaughters right before their eyes is a scary thing. The fact that they’ve grown immune to seeing dead bodies thrown around everywhere is even scarier. In an article named La Frontera, they revealed that the generation already possesses a nickname. “Due to the current levels of extreme violence presented by the drug war as well as the incorporation of children into drug gangs, children and adolescents of Mexico have been named the Bang Bang Generation.” (La Frontera, 2011) This generation of children is surrounded by rage, resentment and violation which can quickly resort to them acquiring a ‘narco mentality’.
Not much could be considered as a pose for change through the government since the cartels have invaded and taken the power. What needs to be worked on are the people individually. The first step needed for change is to teach a lesson of respect. They must remember to respect for their country, families and enemies; regain sympathy for others and realize that life is precious and gifted.
